A Tiger’s Apology
Was it just me or did Tiger Woods public apology seem to be a bit too canned? He was obviously uncomfortable and reading words direct from cue, but I got the feeling he did not want to be there. And of course not; who would?
I suppose I am trying to say that Tiger and his philandering became public, so now he’s bowing to the wishes of his sponsor’s and media pressure. Though I do not promote Tiger’s behavior, I strongly support privacy and for his dirty laundry to be aired, splattered over the news and screen so blatantly, is appalling.
It is par for history when it comes to celebrities or persons of status to be under the scrutiny of the media and therefore thrown in the public’s face. But really now, do I need to know? Do I really care? Would this incident have mattered to a child’s precious well-being had they not heard of the sordid details so eloquently?
The man is still a golf icon and idol for many aspiring golfers and next child superstars as well. How dare we attempt to take away his crown of a great golf legend because of his personal problems. Tiger is human and as such makes human mistakes.
His actions are a shame, but they do not make him less of a golfer. Which is the only reason we know his name anyway. To say he is no longer suitable in his position and for sponsors to pull their support seems silly. You have heard it many times before, but it still holds true: was JFK any less of a president because of his indiscretions? No! We just didn’t know of his personal issues until after his stint.
Then I hold to my convictions that media does more harm than good, but unless we completely unplug, we must also allow for our own minds to decide. It is not enough to be handed the truth across digital means via forced perspective. If the topic truly is worth our interest, then we must do our own research and come to our own conclusions.
Lastly, once we have determined the truths as logical, and if worth another moments consideration, then we would no longer behave as mindless rats following the ruse that media always seems to purport. If Tiger had been your neighbor and not famous, would you have even known about these issues? Maybe, but if my neighbor got caught cheating on his wife I don’t think his status would be affected so detrimentally.
Let it go! Move on! Enough time spent dragging this man through the mud. Besides, I think there are greater, news-worthy concerns in this great nation to keep the media busy and out of private lives.
